Once the electrics and the grant paperwork are sorted (see ourtechnology and grantsguides), the actual hardware decision comes down to three things that intersect more than most reviews admit: how it looks on your wall, whether it talks to your solar and your energy tariff, and how long the cable-management decision stays convenient once the novelty's worn off.
Tethered vs untethered: the argument nobody fully wins
Tethered chargers have a cable permanently attached - no uncoiling a wet, dirty cable from the boot in the rain. Untethered chargers are just a socket on the wall, which reads as neater and more minimal but means carrying your own cable. A common compromise: buy untethered for the aesthetics, then leave a cable locked into the socket permanently via the companion app - effectively tethered day-to-day, but removable for a house viewing or if the cable gets damaged. Cable theft (driven by scrap copper value) is also pushing more buyers on street-facing driveways toward untethered units with a proper digital locking mechanism.
The three names that come up constantly: Ohme, Hypervolt, Zappi
The Ohme Home Pro is known for its built-in screen and tight integration with dynamic tariffs like Octopus - though it typically relies on a cellular SIM connection, which can mean a small monthly fee after the first few years. Hypervolt is generally the pick for aesthetics and cable management, with Wi-Fi connectivity via an external antenna and solid solar integration. The myenergi Zappi is the one built for genuinely complex setups - homes running solar PV and battery storage together - acting more like an energy router than a simple car charger. Which one actually fits depends on your setup more than any single "best charger" ranking can capture.
What charging actually costs
The gap between charging methods is bigger than most people expect. A slow charge on a standard variable electricity rate can run upwards of 24p/kWh; an intelligent off-peak EV tariff can bring that down to around 7p/kWh. In practical terms, that's the difference between roughly £21 and under £9 to cover 400 miles at home - and both are considerably cheaper than a public rapid charger at around 65p/kWh. Whether a smart charger's extra upfront cost is worth it usually comes down to how quickly that gap pays it back, not the sticker price alone.
