EV Grant Applied, Car Arriving Early: What to Do

On this page

If your car arrives before the renters/flat-owners grant is approved, arrange interim charging and keep the installation conditional on approval. A delivery booking does not change the grant process.

Apply when the evidence is ready

An eligible vehicle on order can qualify under the eligibility guidance. You do not have to wait until it arrives, but you still need the installer’s dated quote and the relevant permissions before applying. Our approval timeline guide gives the sequence and help contact.

Keep the installation booking flexible

Tell the installer your delivery date, application status and outstanding permissions. Ask what happens if approval has not arrived by the proposed installation date. The official application process places approval before work and the installer’s claim after completion.

Do not treat a predicted waiting time as an approval date. Keep a copy of the acknowledgement and respond to requests for information using the scheme’s official channels.

Arrange a suitable temporary charging plan

Find usable public or workplace chargepoints and check access hours, connector type, charging price and parking conditions. Estimate the energy needed for your normal journeys rather than assuming you must refill a whole battery every day.

Do not assume an ordinary household socket is suitable for prolonged EV charging. Electrical Safety First advises against standard sockets and recommends assessment by a competent electrician. Follow the vehicle and charging equipment instructions; do not improvise with domestic multi-socket extensions or trailing pavement cables.

If no safe home arrangement is established, use an appropriate public or workplace charger while waiting. A portable lead does not remove electrical, property-permission or highway requirements.

If permission is the blocker

For a rented home or flat, check our landlord permission guide. For on-street parking, use the separate council permission route. Sorting the right permission avoids spending time on an application that is not ready.

Common questions

Can I apply while my car is on order?

Yes, an eligible vehicle on order is accepted under the renters/flat-owners eligibility guidance. The quote, permissions and other evidence are still required.

Can the installer start before approval?

The renters/flat-owners application process says work can start after approval. Rearrange the booking if necessary; do not backdate paperwork.

Is funding guaranteed while I wait?

No. A pending application is not an award. Follow the scheme terms and tell the administrator about relevant changes in your circumstances.

Is there a priority service for an imminent car delivery?

The application guidance checked on 26 September 2026 does not describe a delivery-date fast track. Ask the scheme support team for your application’s status.
