PEN Fault Protection vs Earth Rod: What You Need

If a quote for your EV charger mentions an earth rod, or your installer starts asking about your property’s earthing arrangement, this is the reason - and it’s one of the least-explained parts of the whole installation process.
What a PME supply is
Most modern UK homes are supplied on a system called PME - Protective Multiple Earthing, sometimes labelled TN-C-S. In plain terms, the earth and neutral conductors share a single combined path back through the network, which is an efficient way to distribute electricity and is completely normal.
Why EV charging specifically is the problem
The vulnerability in a PME system is what’s called a PEN fault: a break somewhere in that shared earth-and-neutral conductor, out on the network, away from your house. When that happens on an ordinary property, the risk is limited. When it happens while a car is plugged into an outdoor charger, the metal body of the car can become electrically live relative to the ground someone might be standing on - a genuine touch-voltage risk, and the specific reason BS 7671 Regulation 722.411.4.1 - the wiring regulation covering EV charging installations - requires additional protection for outdoor chargers on PME supplies, where a standard indoor socket circuit wouldn’t need it.

Neither is “wrong” - which one applies mostly comes down to whether your chosen charger has the detection built in, not a safety trade-off between the two.
What this means for your quote
A charger with built-in PEN fault detection can end up cheaper to install than one without, on a property where digging in an earth rod would be difficult or expensive - which runs counter to the instinct that a “smarter” charger should always cost more. If your quote includes earth rod installation as a line item, it’s worth directly asking your installer whether a charger with built-in detection is available for your situation, and what the price difference actually looks like once the rod work is removed.
Not every charger on the market includes this feature, and it isn’t something you can tell from a spec sheet at a glance - it’s worth asking the installer to confirm explicitly rather than assuming.
Common questions
Can I choose which protection method my installer uses?
Usually yes, within what your chosen charger supports. If the unit has built-in detection, there's typically no reason to pay for an earth rod as well - if it doesn't, the rod (or an external detection device) becomes the only compliant route on a PME supply. Ask directly which option your specific model supports before the quote is finalised, not after.
Is my home definitely on a PME supply?
Almost certainly, if you're in a typical modern UK property, but not universally - a small minority of homes (particularly some older or rural properties) are on a TT supply already, which doesn't have the PEN-fault vulnerability in the first place because there's no shared earth-neutral conductor to fail. Your installer will check this as a standard part of the site survey; it isn't something you need to determine yourself in advance.
Does PEN fault protection cost extra if I don't need an earth rod?
Built-in detection is part of the charger hardware, not a separate add-on fee in the way an earth rod installation is - so choosing a model with it built in often works out cheaper overall than paying for a cheaper charger plus a rod, even though the charger's sticker price alone might look higher.
If protection triggers, do I lose power to my whole house?
No - PEN fault protection is specific to the charger and its circuit. It's designed to isolate the charging point itself if a fault is detected, not to trip your home's main supply, which is exactly the point: it protects the person standing near the car without needing to affect anything else in the property.
