Retrospective OZEV Grant Applications: Why Not?
On this page
Do not install a chargepoint first and expect a household grant to reimburse you afterwards. The renters/flat-owners route requires approval before work; the on-street parking route expressly excludes backdating.
Renters and flat owners
Under the official application process, you obtain an authorised installer’s quote, collect documents and permissions, then apply. Work follows approval. The installer claims after completing the installation; that later claim is not permission to start early.
Our approval timeline guide explains preparation and support contacts. It does not promise a particular number of days.
Households with on-street parking
The on-street scheme says applicants must not already have installed the chargepoint. Council consent for a permanent cross-pavement solution and the relevant property permissions are separate requirements. Do not confuse a council permit with a grant award.
If installation has already happened
Gather your quote, application acknowledgement, approval correspondence, installation date and invoice. Explain the actual sequence to your installer and the scheme administrator using the support details for your grant. They can give a decision on your application; this guide cannot promise an exception.
Do not backdate an invoice, permission or installation record. If someone offers to change dates to obtain funding, decline and raise the issue with the scheme administrator.
Before agreeing an installation date
Ask the installer to identify which approval is still outstanding, who must obtain it and whether the booking can move. Keep the grant contribution separate from your own budget until its conditions are satisfied. A quotation showing a possible grant deduction is not itself a grant approval.
If you are replacing damaged or stolen equipment, start with the replacement and insurance guide: prior grant use and the circumstances of the installation need checking separately.
Common questions
Can I install while the renters grant is pending?
The published process says installation can begin after OZEV approves the application. An acknowledgement or provisional installer booking is not approval.
What if work has already started?
Give the installer and scheme administrator the actual dates and ask for a decision. Do not assume funding will be available or agree to altered paperwork.
Can the on-street parking grant be backdated?
No. Its published eligibility terms explicitly say the chargepoint must not already be installed and the grant cannot be backdated.
Are workplace grant rules identical?
No. Use the guidance for the particular workplace or landlord scheme rather than applying the household process to it.
